Parent Support Sessions

When the usual parenting advice isn't working…

Parenting can feel overwhelming when your child is struggling with anxiety, big emotions or the demands of everyday life.

Perhaps mornings have become a battle, school feels impossible, or your child holds it together all day only to fall apart when they get home.

Maybe you've tried the usual parenting strategies, but nothing seems to help - and you're left wondering what you're missing.

You might be questioning whether anxiety, ADHD, autism or PDA could be playing a part. Or perhaps you simply know that things are difficult and want to understand your child better.

You don't have to figure it all out on your own.

I offer one-to-one parent support sessions to help you make sense of what's happening, understand your child's needs and work out practical, compassionate ways forward.

What is a parent support session?

A parent support session is a focused, one-to-one consultation with me, Dr Jenny Draisey, a clinical psychologist specialising in child anxiety and neurodiversity. It's an opportunity to step back from the day-to-day challenges, explore what's happening for your child and think together about what might help. We can explore your child's anxiety, emotions, behaviour and individual needs, including whether ADHD, autism or PDA might be relevant. We'll consider the bigger picture - what your child may be finding difficult, what might be driving their responses, and how you can support them in a way that feels right for your family. You'll leave with a clearer understanding of your child, practical ideas to try and recommendations for possible next steps.

This is about understanding your child, not blaming you or finding fault with your parenting.

What happens during a session?

1. Tell me what's been happening:
We'll explore your concerns, what daily life looks like and what you most want help with. There's time to talk about what's difficult without feeling rushed or judged.

2. Make sense of your child's needs.
We'll think about what's behind the difficulties and whether anxiety, neurodivergence, emotional
overwhelm or other factors may be contributing.

3. Explore what might help.
Together, we'll identify practical strategies tailored to your child and family, rather than relying on one-size-fits-all parenting advice.

4. Leave with a plan.
You'll receive a written summary of our discussion, recommendations and suggested next steps, so you have something to return to after the session.

Parent support sessions can help you explore a range of concerns, including:

- Child anxiety: worries, avoidance, separation anxiety, bedtime difficulties and fear of new situations.
- ADHD and emotional regulation: understanding overwhelm, impulsivity, frustration and difficulties with everyday routines.
- Autism and PDA: understanding your child's need for autonomy, demand avoidance, sensory needs and anxiety.
- School anxiety and school avoidance: exploring what's making school difficult and identifying ways to support your child.
- Meltdowns and after-school distress: understanding why your child may hold things together outside the home and release their distress with you.
- Parenting strategies: finding approaches that support your child's emotional needs while making family life more manageable.

We can also explore situations where you're unsure what's going on. You don't need to arrive with a diagnosis or a clear explanation of the problem.
